A Chinese Tragedy...3 Gorges Dam
History of the 3 Gorges Dam | Important numbers | Life on the Chang Jiang | In opposition | And the view!

The beautiful landscape of the Chang Jiang is like no other. It is full of shadows, mystery, and pure power.
Fable tells us that the scenic channel was carved in stone by the goddess Yao Ji as a means of averting the river around the remnants of a dozens of dragons she had slain for distressing the peasants.

The Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) is located between the cities of Chongqing and Wuhan, and is central to those living on its route. The 3 Gorges Dam project originated in the 1920's, but the idea was never fully realized until the 1990's. Construction began in 1993, and since then the costs, both financially and emotionally, have been high.

The history of planning, financing, and constructing the 3 Gorges Dam is long and varied. There are as many proponents as opponents carrying the same amount of money and intellect, differing only in political muscle.

There are many downfalls associated with the construction of the 3 Gorges dam. The most incredible is the flooding of hundreds of miles of land. Land that is inhabited by millions of Chinese that are being forced to relocate.
Next, is the loss of years of historical sites and data that will never be duplicated. Finally, the corruption that has evolved throughout the entire process. From the plots to overspend to the stealing of grant money earmarked for the relocation of people who can not afford to move their families.

Throughout this site you will find many links to Asian and American sites. I have attempted to view the Dam from all angles, in the hope of helping you decide its valor.
Additionally, I lack the technological skill to paste photographs directly on the pages, so I have created linkd to many websites that include photos. I have chosen these photos as the best representations of the River and Dam, as I believe them to be.
